IN a shocking attack that stunned the world 20 years ago, a baby girl was snatched from her mother and killed by an adult chimpanzee while the pair were walking through a national park. Charla Nash, the woman whose face and hands were mauled by a chimpanzee in 2009, received a new face from surgeons at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. ![]() In 2012, a settlement was reached in the amount of US$4 million, nearly the entire amount of Herold’s estate. Nash filed a lawsuit against Herold, who died in 2010. He urged lawmakers to reject her request. However, Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen said that allowing Nash to sue the state would “open the floodgates for unlimited lawsuits and liability that would bankrupt the state.” “You and Charla Nash have given us a lot to go over,” Connecticut State Senator John Kissel said. Members of the 45-member committee seemed stunned by Willinger’s presentation. “As you are aware, this is the same chimpanzee that escaped from the owner’s car and led local police on a wild chase for hours in downtown Stamford until the animal could be secured back in the car.” I am concerned that if he feels threatened or if someone enters his territory, he could seriously hurt someone,” Hinsch wrote in the memo. “The animal has reached adult maturity, is very large and tremendously strong. Willinger presented the committee with a memo written by state DEEP biologist Elaine Hinsch to her supervisors in October 2008, less than four months before the chimp attacked Nash. What you will hear will be upsetting and appalling,” Willinger said. She's hoping to sue the state to recover money for her mounting medical bills. “The facts you will shortly hear - and these are facts that will shock you - demonstrate the failure and omission of a state agency to properly and legally protect the public. Nash was left blind and had much of her face stripped off in the Feb. Nash’s lawyer, Charles Willinger of Bridgeport, insisted that his client has the right to have her day in court. The animal was shot dead at the scene by a Stamford police officer. Nash was at the Stamford home of her friend and employer, Sandra Herold, when Herold’s pet chimp, Travis, attacked her, leaving her blind and disfigured. By the time emergency responders got to the scene, there was very little left of her face. Her hands, eyelids, nose and lips were torn from her body. Her eyes had to be removed after the attack.“I want the chance to pay my medical bills and live a comfortable life, but I also want to make sure that what happened to me never happens to anyone else ever again,” Nash said. In 2009, 50-year-old Charla was violently attacked by her friends pet chimpanzee, Travis - who weighed over 200-pounds. ![]() The deranged beast tore off the helpless woman. A Chicago woman accused of telling her teen son to shoot a man at a hot dog stand when a man attacked her is suing the city and members of its police force, after murder. She could eat, smell, express her emotion and feel the face." The 200-pound domesticated chimp uncharacteristically snapped and attacked Nash when she went to pick the ape up at Herolds Stamford, Conn., house. When the transplanted tissue heals and nerves regrow – a process that will take at least nine months and possibly longer – Pomahac says Nash "should control the face well. "We're optimistic that should Charla choose in the future, we could transplant the hands again, should a suitable donor be identified."ĭespite the loss of the hands, Pomahac says, "I consider it still a success" because Nash has a very good chance of regaining "a very functional face." local time on June 20 after the owner of the chimpanzee, 68-year-old Tamara Brogoitti, called 911 and reported it escaped from its cage and bit. "After several days of doing everything possible to retain the hands, it was clear that they were not thriving," Pomahac said at a press conference. Authorities were called to a home at around 8 a.m. That compromised blood flow to the transplanted hands, so surgeons had to remove them. Charla Nash, a Connecticut woman mauled by a chimpanzee in 2009, hopes legislators will allow her to proceed with a 150 million lawsuit against the state. But after the operation Nash suffered a blood infection that caused her blood pressure to crash. In a 20-hour operation, surgeon Bohdan Pomahac says the team transplanted hands from the same donor.
